Ten One-Song Reunions We Wish to See

Music junkies are innate daydreamers. Why? Because reality rarely offers us the musical highs we crave on a regular basis. On Sunday, in Manchester for example, reality momentarily caught up with our imaginations when Johnny Marr (formerly of The Smiths) joined Bernard Sumner (of New Order) for a one-song reunion of their super group Electronic.

In response, we rocked out, only to quickly retreat into our fantasies with a new scenario outside the confines of reality: What would be the ultimate one-song live reunion?

The following is what our staff dreamed up. It’s a wish list that runs the gamut from pipedream to wet dream, with the occasional wish upon a star that could actually come true. And if these reunions did happen, we could finally return to reality for good. Yeah, dream on.

Sleater-Kinney - “Modern Girl”

sleater-kinney

Where? The Pacific Northwest’s first Independence Day celebration.

Why? I live hoping that a live performance would dislodge this song from my head.

Odds: It’s really just a successful Portlandia sketch away.

–Erin Carson

David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Head Over Heels”

jagger-bowie

Where? A small high school in Middlesex, VA

Why? It’s hard to forget the magic behind Bowie and Jagger’s ’80s gem “Dancing in the Street”. And with Bowie’s triumphant return to music this year, it’s high time we see another slice of his silly side. I imagine the pair old and hardened, but unable to hide their personal passions, forcing them to bounce around spastically, lock eyes and serenade one other yet again. It’d be a sexy display of manhood, clearly inappropriate for minors, but not as vulgar once we realize Bowie’s character is just Jagger’s imaginary doomsday lover. Will Jagger decide to destroy the world in hopes of finding true love? Tune in next week.

Odds: About as likely as a successful Donnie Darko trilogy.

–Allison Franks

Will Sheff and Jonathan Meiburg – “Lost Coastlines”

sheffjon

Where? Next to an a rotting sailboat surrounded by cow skulls.

Why? Ever since Jonathan Meiburg exited Okkervil River to tend to his full-time role in Shearwater (at the same time, pushing Sheff out of Shearwater), the two bands have never been the same. It would be nice to hear their two voices and two distinct but complimentary songwriting styles in imperfect harmony once again. “Lost Coastlines” always felt like the perfect, deliberate send off, as the two diverged once, but hopefully not for all.

Odds: Not so bad. Both bands still call Texas their home and the two are apparently on good terms with one another.

–Drew Litowitz

Noel and Liam Gallagher – “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”

liamnoel

Where? Their poor mother’s living room.

Why? My own sadistic pleasure.

Odds: When Manchester freezes over. Well…

–Matt Melis

Big Boi and Andre 3000 – “B.O.B.”

outkast

Where? Tri-Cities High School

Why? Let’s kickstart a new album by getting them to just finally do something together, already.

Odds: 3%, or the same odds as getting abducted by ATLiens. I mean aliens.

–Adam Kivel

Sonic Boom, J Spaceman, Natty Brooker – “Halleluwah”

spacemen3

Where? Your nightmares

Why? Spacemen 3 performing Can’s magnum opus? Is your head reeling yet?

Odds: 2.35% Whatever that means.

–Paula Mejia

Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush – “Islands in the Stream”

Screen shot 2013-07-09 at 1.30.39 PM

Where? Solsbury Hill at dawn

Why? After their memorable duet “Don’t Give Up” from Gabriel’s solo album So, the duo did just that. Come on, with ’80′s bands reforming daily for tax reasons, surely there’s room for one more Gabriel/Bush moment in the sun, or even island in the stream. OK, and it can be for charity, too.

Odds: Two in the bush.

–Tony Hardy

Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Gucci Mane – “Pillz (Bitch I Might Be)”

guccispring

Where? Dancing in gogo outfits in cages on top of Reddit’s servers.

Why? Let’s break the Internet once and for all.

Odds: As likely as it is for dogs to overtake cats as the Internet’s pet du jour.

–Chris Bosman

John Oates, Jim James, Zigaboo Modeliste, R. Kelly, and Larry Graham – “All Night Long”

SuperJam

Where? Surprise set at the fountain.

Why? CoS reader ghornett was right: that SuperJam setlist was completely lacking in Lionel Richie.

Odds: Why does Bonnaroo ever have to end, anyway?

–Ben Kaye

Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear – “About a Girl”

McCartney Nirvana

Where? Somewhere in the Seattle Center, or Sasquatch!

Why? Last year’s performance of Sound City cut “Cut Me Some Slack” during the 12-12-12: Concert for Sandy Relief was pretty swell. Hours beforehand, however, millions of fans speculated they would have reworked an oldie from Nirvana’s catalogue — so you could imagine the mild disappointment that night. Without ruining a good thing, it would be rather fitting for the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death — next April already, folks — that they reunite again to play one song. What better choice than “About a Girl”, essentially a Beatles ode in itself.

Odds: Endless, nameless.
